Art 1 Final Portfolio

1) I think my most successful project this semester would be my landscape portrait. It turned out better than I expected it would. I was nervous at first on how to even startr it but once I started I felt inspired. Blending different colors to make different shades definitely pulled the whole painting together. Adding different values and shadows is what makes it pop. I added different tints and shades to give the cliff detail and also in the tree to show the shadows & different leaf colors. The hardest part of the portrait was painting the cliff. There had to be so many different tints and shades of brown to give it a rough texture. It was definitely a challenge but this is my favorite art piece this year.

2) This was not my favorite project, however, I do feel like it turned out good and I learned the most from it. I learned how to look at a photograph at choose where all the different vanishing points are and which ones would be best to use. I also feel like I developed a lot in adding values and blending those values together to make objects "pop" off the page. One thing I was learning as I did this project was writing letters going to a vanishing point. That was my biggest struggle, however, I think they turned out alright. Another thing I learned is that the more colors you add, the better it looks. You can't be afraid to add different colors even if you don't think they will fit with the colors your doing. As long as you add the different colors the right way it will make it look 3 dimensional and could also add shadowing. This project was one of my biggest learning experiences in this class.

3) In this anamorphosis drawing I used techniques that we have been learing throughout the class. Adding different values and shades makes the cup look rounded and 3 dimensional. Adding the shadown behind the cup is what makes it "pop" off the page when you look at it from a certain angle. Using different skills that we have been learning throughout other major projects and drawings in our sketch book is what helped make this project so successful. I have really grown as an artist because of this class and I have finally realized that it is okay to add color. I used gray, purple, and yellow to give this cup value. Before I learned any of this I probably would have just colored it blue and it would have looked completely flat. I really feel like this drawing shows some of my skills that I learned this year.

4) This project was the least important to the concepts we learned this year. I say that because the only concept we really used was the idea of positive and negative space. The positive and negative space should add texture and detail to the print, however I could have added more texture than I did. From this project I learned how to pick out the positive and negative space in a picture. I also had to understand that you need to seperate positive from positive and negative from negative space or else the whole picture will just blend together. I know I will most likely use positive and negative space in every art piece I make but I think I could have learned it in an art piece that incorporated other concepts as well. That is all I feel like I grasped from this project though. Therefore, it was the least important to me growing as an artist.

5) I chose this particular project to reflect me as an artist because I love sculpting with clay. I like more physical art that I can use my hands rather than a pencil or a paintbrush. Using my hands makes me feel like I have more control over how it will move exactly. I also chose this to reflect me because one of my favorite places to be is the beach. Adding the ocean into my artwork made it more personal because it's something I actually like. The fact that we had a lot of freedom with what we wanted to do made it fun. I liked the idea of making everything literally pop off of the clay tile. I really enjoyed everything about this project and getting to be creative with it.
